One of the big questions that home based businesses face is how to set up their offices electronically to connect to the outside world. Today we see two principal players in the local marketplace for broadband access: Comcast and Qwest. Scott told the group that there was a new option coming soon that could revolutionize this market, and it's called "WiMAX".
WiMax is a wireless Internet access that blankets an area similar to how cell phones work. The technology used is totally different from that provided today over cell phone systems, however. It is more like creating a dedicated line access to the Internet than a shared access as is seen with Comcast. WiMAX offers a wireless alternative to cable and DSL for "last mile" broadband access, which is the most expensive to provide.
Scott said that WiMAX is being installed in Portland now and that it will be available next year. He said that the rates would be significantly less than current Qwest and Comcast rates. He estimated that WiMAX service would run around $20/month. Cell phones using WiMAX will come after the networks are in place around the country. This will be in 2010 or later.
Connecting your office to WiMAX is simple. All you need is a WiMAX modem, which you can connect to router to create access points. Most office networks already have routers, so this is straightforward. The WiMAX modem can also be connected to wireless router. There will also be plug-in WiMAX modems that can be installed into laptops to provide roaming wireless access.
The WiMAX technology is nothing short of revolutionary, and Scott recommends that if you need broadband access now that you avoid signing long-term service agreeements so that you can take advantage of it when it becomes available.
Other Tips
- Wireless Networks: If you have a wireless network in your house or business, be sure that is secured with a password to prevent others from accessing it. If your wireless network is not secured, your computers are vulnerable to hackers and identity thieves.
- Anti-virus Software: Scott likes AVG Anti-Virus software
- Surge Protectors: Most are a waste of money. The best brand out there is TrippLite.
- Back-Up Power Supplies: Scott highly recommends these. They not only offer power to your computers for short periods in the event of an external power outage, but also serve as surge protectors and provide cleaner power to your equipment.
